Monday Jazz – Halifax Events Photography

I had the absolute pleasure of covering the Halifax Jazz Festival last week and I’ve finally grabbed a few minutes to blog about it.

One of the aspects of the school that I absolutely love is how many opportunities we get in the community. Each event covered is a major learning point in my career and I don’t think I’d be where I am today without those chances. I get to be exposed to numerous types of photography and challenging situations that really test my skill. It helps keep me fresh!

Monday at the main Festival Tent was a bunch of fun. There were happy people, both on stage and in the crowd, the weather was beautiful, and you could feel excitement in the air. There were a lot of jazz lovers in the audience and they were far from disappointed with each performer! The first group to take the stage, JJ Johnson & K Winding Tribute, played a lot of the jazz standards, which is always a crowd pleaser. They’re love for their music truly shone through their performance.

Riot Squad was the second act to perform and they were full of energy! All of the music was upbeat and made dancing in your seat nearly impossible to avoid. I especially loved the intensity of the musicians – I have so many shots of faces clearly into what they were doing.

Aurora Scott. Her name just sends chills down my spine. Aurora’s voice is soothing and smooth and each song she performed was FULL of soul. She was by far one of my favourite performers over the few days that I was there.

Finally, Parc-X Trio, a group from Montreal, closed off the show. Parc-X was a little more on the side of experimental jazz, but again, they really brought everything that they had to their performance. I enjoyed hearing something different in comparison to the rest of the acts that day!

I will be blogging a few more times with my experiences with Jazz Festival, so please feel free to keep checking back!
